The Bet-Cough Manoeuvre - Sat 10th November 2007 @ 1:13 am Action:
Make a bet/raise and then cough - /cough - right after it.

Effect:
"Wtf was that for..?"
Are you strong, trying to look like you're bluffing? Or weak, trying to make them fold?

Result:
Softer / inexperienced players don't like the pressurised decision. The bet-cough can get you a call with the nuts or force a fold with 9 high..

Strategy:
It's all in the timing - how the opponent's going to react. The safest way to experiment is to try building pots when you're strong.

If I get the call I'm aiming for, I'll usually hesitate on the next street... then make a "weak" check. With any luck, they'll bet the hands they'd normally check.

Example:

with a flop.

You always want to bet but don't want to scare off weak 10's, middle pairs or big aces. If someone's got a 10, they don't want to feel like a nob after folding because something as feeble as a cough put them off.. So they'll put pressure on themselves to call in case you're stealing.

If they call, follow up with a convincingly unsure shite-I-really-didn't-want-you-to-do-that check on the turn, and wait for them to bet.

If they check as well, depending on the cards that have come out, make whatever bet looks as much like I'm-definitely-nicking-this-from-you as possible on the river. Betting the pot's always suspicious..

Oh and if they fold at any point, sometimes I'd stick a quick "thanks" - /ty - in there too. Keep them guessing (and feeling like a nob).

The cough can be a perfect disguise for flush draws as well if you think it'll slow someone down to calling instead of raising.

The turn and the river obviously affect the strategy the most. You just have to play what you've represented. If you think they hit a big ace, all-in might work. Who knows? Get creative..

Not that it can only be used on the flop.. Anyway, it's a good place to start if you're not using emotes tactically yet.

Re: The Bet-Cough Manoeuvre - Sat 17th November 2007 @ 5:37 pm Yeah I mean the only thing with that is you're gonna piss them off - maybe you want to, I dunno - but I think it's easier for people to laugh at the bet-cough.

Do you like to make it so that people come after you? I only really use the /rude when I'm tired and can't be bothered to do anything clever. Makes people think I'm tilting when actually I'm playing water tight..
