PKR - a Safe Haven from "the Bots"

Posted by douche - 2 December 2007

Look out, the bots are coming - run!
The truth or scare mongering?

I read this about how bots will rise and surpass humans as poker players. Computers can brute force - work out every possible move in - a chess / checkers game from start to finish. But is that surprising? The rules are strict, next-moves are limited and the pieces are visible.

When all the information's out on the table like that, clearly computers own humans at processing it. But poker isn't like that. The uncertainty in poker is nothing like the uncertainty in chess.

I disagree with some of what this dude says and I'll go through what and why that is now..

Am I Addicted to Poker?

Posted by douche - 4 November 2007

The way I see it, the “gambling instinct” is built into every one of us.
From birth. It's a natural part of the competitive human psyche.

It's just putting risk-reward assessment together with impatience - something our society's practically built on doing - so why pretend it doesn't or shouldn't exist?

Because, without a doubt, it's potentially dangerous - that's why..
No.. Really..? So's doing 70 miles an hour inside a 2 ton metal box
on wheels but we all do it and cars are cool so that's ok.

I love driving. I do it all the time and depend on it to get around. I'd get withdrawal symptoms if I didn't do it too..

Chronic fatigue from running everywhere, not as much time in the day, general boredom, plus I might get flattened by someone smart enough to actually use a car.. Pretty sure I'm addicted to it but it's ok, I'm safe because it's socially acceptable. Phew.

PKR doucheCast #2 - the $20 Heads Up

Posted by douche - 15 October 2007

$20 PKR heads up + attempted commentary.
It's the second doucheCast ever.

Still a heads-up but with better stakes and proper emoting. Didn't need any tilt-poking in this one, just kept a step ahead of my image instead - I think.. might have just been lucky though..

This was after about a week's break from poker which really helps. Making "good" decisions felt way easier.

I've been a bit inactive recently with the break-taking thing - and so's PKRfriends - but normal service should resume shortly. Anyway, should probably just watch it now..

PKR Rakeback - What? Why do I need it?

Posted by douche - 24 September 2007

Rake: Horticultural contraption for gathering
leaves, smoothing soil and light weeding.

That's right, think of the garden - join PKR with a PKRfriends bonus code 3½ times and get a whole rakeback.

No wait, that's not true.. You could buy a rake with your rakeback though if you're into gardening..

And that really is right. If you're going to play regularly - at PKR or anywhere else - the most important thing is knowing how to play poker. The second is rakeback and making sure you have it - It costs 30% more without it..

Everything you need to know about PKR rakeback & how to get it.

PKR doucheCast #1 - the $5 Heads Up

Posted by douche - 19 September 2007

A full PKR heads up + attempted commentary.
It's the very first doucheCast ever.

I know, $5 isn't particularly spectacular.. I'll play better stakes and use actions properly once I've got used to making these things.

There is some emoting in there but it's mainly just basic tilt-poking which I think works and he ends up pretty readable..

It's all in the tilt. Especially heads up + low stakes. Never really had the cards but got a lot of chips calling some of his supreme bluffs. No offence Mr. Cochise22 - Good game..

Full Tilt vs. PKR - Speed vs. Agility?

Posted by douche - 6 September 2007

Pros telling you to play at Full Tilt: 64
Pros telling you to play at PKR: 0

Amateur mid-limiters telling you to play at PKR: 1

I've been playing Full Tilt recently to see if anything's changed or I'm missing something.
It's different. Both are arguably better - it depends what you want. Quality or quantity?

Full Tilt vs. PKRMore insight into hands or just more hands? The highest quality and most advanced poker room out there is undoubtedly PKR and Full Tilt can't compare.

But Full Tilt gets 10/10 for quantity.. Never short of games
at every level and a sea of low-mid stakes tables and tourneys. Blink and you'll miss a hand - PKR can't compare.

You can play up to 4 tables at PKR though and Full Tilt is a top quality pancake room so which do you choose?

PKR v1.3 - Stephen Hawking Does Accents.. Who Knew?

Posted by douche - 24 August 2007

An update from PKR.
An er.. you what? from the community.

New, improved.. and a let down?

Good to see a bunch of new actions relevant to poker - 'hidden' ones here - but PKR didn't think about how they'd work. Good fold should sound like an opinion, not a narration.

Static Steve's definitely better at theoretical physics than voiceovers..

Heroic Poker - Legendary Bad Poker Techniques

Posted by douche - 16 August 2007

90% of poker players probably rate
themselves in the top 20%

I'm no mathematician but I know that 90 is bigger than 20 so a lot of us are wrong.

Maybe we're not though.. Maybe 70 per cent of us just prefer to keep ourselves grounded and away from any elaborate poker super-stardom by using some of these inspirationally bad techniques from time to time.. That's my excuse anyway - What's yours?

PKR? 3D Poker? What Happened?

Posted by douche - 9 August 2007

PKR, "the future of online poker", looked set to wipe the floor with the
rest of the industry - using an immaculately rendered 3D mop.

Apparently though, for most of us, the floor's clean enough already.

Most poker players prefer their more restrictive 2D alternative. Why? Easy, there are more tables, the players are "better", PKR hands take a couple of seconds longer, and none of that 3D stuff makes any difference to the game anyway.

Legit reasons? Or a herding reflex?

New Update - PKR v1.2

Posted by douche - 24 May 2007

There was a lot of hype around this update and
what it brings to PKR - Has it done the job?

A new pair of avi's and an "angry" postureStand up showdowns, open folds (1 card or both), table postures and more ways to check your hole cards.

New voices, clothing and now body shapes in the editor and, of course, the Club Metro environment - PKR call it a "trendy London nightclub".

Have PKR's latest additions fulfilled the community's undying hunger for more? How much has all this stuff actually added to the game? What's good? What's bad? And could the bad be made good?

That's Poker? Or That's PKR..?

Posted by douche - 12 May 2007

A big steaming pile of bullshit.
Back to Party Poker..

Losing your whole stack to a 2-outer river trips from one of PKR's infamous ubernoobs is enough to test any sane person's patience.

And in the skeptical world of poker, accusations of dodgy dealings aren't exactly surprising.

Rake maximisation would be PKR's incentive and poker is just numbers so you can't rule out some sophisticated - but fairly straightforward - programming to manipulate cards on-the-fly.

Random number generators (RNGs) - Actually random? Or controlled by PKR to ruin every good player's day? Variance or fraud?

Turn up. Chip in. Cash out.

Posted by douche - 2 May 2007

PKR's about as close as you'll get to
live poker without the pressure

Except on those unexpected flops. Something like - - and you know that king was red but.. Wonder if anyone's watching...

Something like [10h][5h][Ah]For anyone who hasn't played at PKR yet, your opponents actually see you looking back at your hand.

Well maybe not you exactly, but they do see the tailor-suited hard nut you designed do it for you - or the cocktail dressed supermodel - or the afro'd patriot in his country's flag, designer sunglasses, gold chain, jacket, jeans and flip-flops..  It's not just names and numbers anymore..
